This 5-leg planetary gear tool was designed to eliminate operator idling by automating the process of holding flanges in place as they cooled. Previously, operators had to manually secure flanges, often heated to over 900°F, until they shrank into position on timing belt pulleys. The tool not only enhances safety but also improves efficiency by securely holding flanges of varying diameters, adjustable between 5" and 15". Developed during my internship with the Continuous Improvement team at Dodge Industrial, the tool's primary structure, including the plane of rotation and legs, is made from A36 steel, chosen for its durability, optimal weight, and heat resistance. I commissioned the plane of rotation from a local laser cutting company to ensure precision. Key components such as the geared leg adapters, sun gear, planet carrier, and handle were 3D printed using PETG, offering a balance of strength and design flexibility. The tool can lock into 52 distinct positions, each separated by approximately 6.92°, allowing for precise and repeatable adjustments during operation. The entire tool was meticulously modeled in SolidWorks.
